Turtles Urinate Via Their Mouths—A First

When a species of soft-shelled turtle in China piddles in puddles, it does so through its mouth—the first evidence of an animal doing so, a new study says.
The findings could also have stomach-churning implications for humans with kidney failure, scientists say.
Researchers at the National University of Singapore noticed Pelodiscus sinensisturtles would stick their heads into puddles of water and wiggle their tongues, but they weren't drinking.
Study leader Yuen K. Ip and colleagues also knew that the soft-shelled turtle had structures similar to gills inside its mouth, which had previously been thought to help the turtle breathe—but did not actually function as gills.
"However, I saw a controversy here," Ip said via e-mail. "If the turtle has lungs, why would it need to submerge its head in water [to breathe]?"

Tracking Turtle Pee
To find out, the researchers purchased live turtles from a local market and kept them in water for six days. Only 6 percent of the urea—the main ingredient in animal urine besides water—produced by the turtles ended up in the urine from their hind ends.
After the researchers removed the reptiles from the water but provided them with a puddle, the turtles dipped their heads and, using the water puddles as a mouth rinse, spat out 50 times more urea than was present in the mouth discharge. The urea travels through the reptiles' bloodstreams to their mouths, so it's not technically urination.
The team also found that the turtles carry a gene that produces a specialized protein that helps expel urea. The gene was expressed in their mouths, not their kidneys.
The reptiles live in brackish water, which makes the mouth pee a clever adaptation.
If the turtles expelled their urea the traditional way—a process that requires a lot of water—they'd need more water to stay hydrated.
This would lead to what Ip called a "a vicious cycle of imbibing more seawater"—like us, the turtles would have to drink more saltwater to lower the salt in their blood, because reptiles can't expel salt in their urine. This process would continue until the saltwater proved fatal.
Instead, simply rinsing out the mouth without drinking any salty water helps keep the creatures healthy.
"The ability to excrete urea through the mouth instead of the kidney might have facilitated P. sinensis and other soft-shelled turtles to successfully invade the brackish and/or marine environment," Ip said.

Turtle-Pee Research May Help People
Ip's research interests tend toward "what we can learn from the animal world to resolve biomedical problems," he added.
In other words, the turtle with a mouth full of wee could someday help humans who have undergone kidney failure. Currently, human patients with failed kidneys must undergo dialysis to remove waste from their bloodstream. (Explore an interactive of the human body.)
"Hypothetically," Ip said, "if active urea-excretion mechanisms can be expressed in the mouth of a patient with kidney failure, urea excretion can still occur, through rinsing the mouth with water—just like the soft-shelled turtle."
For now, though—perhaps to the relief of some patients—the idea is just a tinkle in Ip's eye.

High blood pressure during pregnancy can affect a child's thinking skills throughout its life, research suggests.
Scientists studied 398 men born between 1934 and 1944 whose mothers' blood pressure during pregnancy was recorded in their medical records.

The men were tested for language skills, maths reasoning and visual and spatial ability at the age of 20 and again at an average age of 69.

Men whose mothers experienced high blood pressure while pregnant performed less well than those whose mothers never suffered the problem. On average, they scored 4.36 points lower on the tests at 69 years old.

The same group also had lower scores at the age of 20, and their scores declined faster over the decades than did those of the other men. The biggest impact was on maths-related reasoning.

Lead scientist Dr Katri Raikonen, from the University of Helsinki in Finland, said: "High blood pressure and related conditions such as pre-eclampsia complicate about 10% of all pregnancies and can affect a baby's environment in the womb.

"Our study suggests that even declines in thinking abilities in old age could have originated during the prenatal period when the majority of the development of brain structure and function occurs."

The findings are published in the latest online issue of the journal Neurology.

Plant Scientists Create 'See-through' Soil

DUNDEE, Scotland, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Researchers in Scotland say they have developed a see-through soil that will enable scientists to study roots in detail for the first time.

The underground world of plant roots is called the rhizosphere and scientists at the University of Abertay Dundee and the James Hutton institute, writing in the journal PLos ONE, say creation of the new transparent soil marks a research milestone that will have applications in many different areas.

The artificial soil that becomes translucent when saturated with a special water-based solution is a substrate very similar to real soil in terms of physical and biological variables, researchers said.

The soil is a synthetic composite utilizing Nafion, often used in power-generating fuel cells, and replicates natural soil chemistry, they said.

"There are many different scientific disciplines that could benefit from this research," Hutton researcher Lionel Dupuy said. "Transparent soils could be used to study the spread and transmission of soil borne pathogens.
"In crop genetics, transparent soils could be used to screen the root systems of a range of genotypes. This would help breed crops with more efficient root systems so that agriculture can rely less on fertilizers."

Children live on in their mothers’ brains for decades, and not just as memories. Scientists have found pockets of male DNA, presumably from boy fetuses, in the brain tissue of women who died in their 70s.

Not only is male DNA present in women’s brains, it’s common, researchers report online September 26 in PLOS ONE. J. Lee Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and her colleagues found snippets of a male-only gene in the brains of 18 of 26 women who died without neurological disease. The male DNA was spread throughout their brains.
 
The technique used in the study couldn’t distinguish if the DNA was from intact, functional brain cells, though in a separate test of brain tissue from a different woman, Nelson and colleagues did spot nuclei from male cells in the brain. Earlier studies in mice hinted that these foreign cells can integrate themselves into the brain and start functioning as nerve cells.
 
So far, cells from fetuses have turned up in women’s blood, livers, lungs, heart and other organs, so finding male DNA in the brain isn’t a complete shock, says geneticist Kirby Johnson of Tufts University in Medford, Mass., who wasn’t involved in the study. “From everything we knew, it’s not really that surprising.”What’s interesting is how the DNA could have gotten there. Male cells from a fetus could have broken through the blood-brain barrier — a wall that protects the fragile brain from pathogens in the blood. But that shouldn’t be possible, Johnson says.
 
If the male DNA did come from a fetus during pregnancy, then the genetic material stuck around in the brain for decades after that. The average age for these women at the time of their death was 70. “Maybe these are with us for a lifetime,” Nelson says.
 
Presumably, mothers can also carry a daughter’s genetic material in their brains; the presence of a Y chromosome simply makes it easier to spot male DNA.
 
Complete medical records, including pregnancy history, weren’t available for the women in the study, which means the researchers couldn’t rule out sources of cellular mingling other than male fetuses. The male DNA could have come from a male twin whose cells ended up moving into his sister’s body during pregnancy, for instance, or they may have come from an organ donation or blood transfusion, or even an older brother who had previously occupied the same uterus as the women.
 
What’s more, cells from several generations could mingle in a single person. Because cells also flow from mother to fetus, a pregnant woman possesses cells from both her mother and her child, and that child could inherit his grandmother’s cells.
 
Fetal cells could be beneficial, harmful or innocuous in a mother’s body. In a follow-up experiment, the researchers found that women with Alzheimer’s had less foreign DNA in their brains than women with healthy brains, hinting that these cells might offer protection from the disease. Those results are too preliminary to be conclusive, Nelson says. In tissues outside the brain, there is preliminary evidence that fetal cells may affect risk for cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Shortness of breath, excessive salivation, tremors, and an intensely painful erection are all indications of being bitten by a highly venomous arachnid commonly known as the banana spider. So toxic is Phoneutria nigriventer, a member of the Ctenidae family of wandering spiders, that its bite has been known to kill people.

The spider is a native of the rain forests of central and South America, but it has been seen scurrying out of crates of bananas shipped to other parts of the world.

The observation that the banana spider’s bite causes priapism, prolonged erections that can damage the penis permanently, got researchers to wonder if its potent venom could be the basis of an alternate treatment for erectile dysfunction, or ED, as television commercials for Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis politely put it. About one in three men seeking a virility lift is not helped by the ED drugs currently on the market.
Brazilian and American scientists report in the current issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine that the toxin from the Brazilian wandering spider may help treat ED in humans, if tests on elderly rodents with erectile dysfunction are anything to go by.

“Researchers from Brazil and the US extracted the toxin, called PnTx2-6, from the deadly venom and injected it into rats which had age-related erectile dysfunction,” reports the UK news site MailOnline. “They found the toxin boosted erections by triggering the release of nitric oxide, which boosts circulation in the male genitals by helping blood vessel walls relax.”

Treatment derived from the toxin may help patients who fail to respond to erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, which use different pathways, study co-author Kenia Nunes told NBC News.

A few years ago, Dr. Anthony Atala’s lab at Wake Forest University got good at making ears. They were growing new ears on a scaffold using patient's cells, because so many soldiers were losing their ears in explosions. Now the Department of Defense has a project that’s closer to Atala’s heart: making new genitals for soldiers who have stepped on bombs.

Other labs are still moving forward with the ear project for the military. But Atala has special expertise dating back to his days as a pediatric urologist. He’s already grown bladders using a patient’s own cells, and he’s made penises that rabbits were able to put to their proper use, fathering litters of new little bunnies. He hopes to use this expertise to help rebuild the bodies of veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as men and boys injured in car accidents.

Atala is one of the pioneers of regenerative medicine. But the field has taken off in a big way, attracting biotechnology companies, the U.S. military and academic labs, which are working to literally make the blind see and the lame walk again. They’re perfecting spray-on skin and aim to mass-produce new body parts using bioprinters based on the jet printers attached to your home computer.

“Right now, the way these organs are made is creating them one by one. By bringing the bioprinting in, we can scale it up,” says Atala, whose lab has contracts with the four-year-old Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM), biotechnology companies and private foundations.

All of this technology is years away from the doctor's office. The most advanced treatments have just begun the very earliest stages of human testing. But all evidence points to the tantalizing prospect of grow-your-own organs and possibly even limbs within a decade or so, and some approaches, such as muscle transplants and spray-on skin, are helping a lucky few now.

Atala’s lab in 2006 made the first full organ ever grown and implanted into a human – the bladder – and the rabbit penises were the first solid organs. A new bid from AFIRM caught his eye. It called for experts in rebuilding the lower abdomen, the genitals, the pelvic area and the bladder.

These injuries are among the least talked-about but among the most horrible affecting war veterans. The improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, planted by insurgents across Iraq and Afghanistan blow off feet, legs and arms, and they can especially damage the pelvic areas that are difficult to protect with body armor.
Atala’s lab is also working to make kidneys, muscle implants, and even to find ways to get fingers to regenerate on their own. (It has to do with waking up some very powerful DNA that goes to sleep soon after a fetus develops). AFIRM’s mission is to align labs like Atala’s with others around the country, getting them to collaborate on projects rather than compete. AFIRM currently funds around 50 research labs, including leaders such as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Rutgers University, the Cleveland Clinic and Rice University.

“We don’t really feel that other groups are competition at all,” Atala says “Our interest is really to get these technologies into patients. We consider the disease the competition.”

Spray-on skinOne area of intense competition – or collaboration – is in spraying on new skin. AFIRM is funding several projects testing a product that uses a patient’s own skin cells, so that rejection is not an issue. Old-fashioned skin grafts may close a wound or a burn, but they don’t heal prettily. ReCell is a product, more of a process really, that uses a small plug of a patient’s own skin, broken down into a soup using enzymes. Cells known as keratinocytes, which give skin its structure, and the melanocytes, which give color, are pulled out, mixed into a liquid suspension and then sprayed over the damaged area.
It’s a thin layer but the cells quickly multiply and, if the process is done right, form an even layer of new skin within days. The result is much more natural-looking than a graft.

Skin is easier to heal because it’s a relatively simple organ and on the surface of the body. Limbs are more complicated – they are made up of bone, muscle, nerves, connective tissue and also skin.
Labs are taking a more traditional approach in trying to restore limbs, by transplanting them. But even there regenerative medicine can play a role. This is where stem cell research comes in. Stem cells are the body’s master cells, and there are several kinds. People have stem cells known as adult stem cells all through their bodies, and they are already partly “educated” to become blood, muscle, bone or nerve cells.
These cells divide and multiply to produce muscle, bones and blood, and they also secrete compounds that help existing tissue and cells regenerate. Some of the projects on AFIRM’s wish list include calls for labs that can combine techniques used to build new body parts with the use of stem cells to help them generate and integrate with the rest of the body.

More powerful cells come from embryos that have barely begun to develop. An entire human body, the collection of muscle, bone, brain, blood, nerves and organs, all develops from the ball of just a few cells that forms days after fertilization. Each one of these cells, known as human embryonic stem cells, contains all the coding needed to make every cell type in the body.

PASADENA, CA — NASA scientists have confirmed that the Mars rover Curiosity has just found the first signs of life on the Red Planet. The air is electrifying as word spread that remains of 4 out of the 7 rovers that have previously landed on Mars have been located and are all doing just fine.

Paul Horner who is NASA’s lead scientist said that everyone at NASA simply forgot about all the other previous missions to Mars. “In all the excitement of the Mars rover Curiosity landing on Mars, we totally spaced it and forgot that we’ve already been to this planet numerous of times before.” Horner continued, “So far we’ve found remains of the Mars 2 and Mars 3 from the Soviet Union in 1971, the Mars Pathfinder from 1997 and the Phoenix Lander from 2008. We’re still searching for the Viking probe from 1976, the Beagle 2 from Europe and the MER-A Mars Exploration Rover from 2003.”

31 year old Steve Middleton from Arizona said he threw a party in celebration of the Mars landing. “I’m actually kind of embarrassed now about this whole rover landing on Mars thing. When this happened a few days ago I was so happy. I threw a huge landing on Mars party with all my friends. I put up signs all over my house that said ‘USA #1′. I called people I knew in other countries and told them to ‘suck it’. And then today I find out the Soviet Union was the first to land on Mars, over 40 years ago. That’s when I put my sad face on and went into a deep depression.”

Beau Hough from Minnesota said he tried moving to the Soviet Union so he could be number one when it came to the subject of landing on Mars. “So I bought two airline tickets to the Soviet Union, from this ‘reputable’ guy off Craigslist for $800. Turns out there is no Soviet Union anymore and now I’m out $800. Thanks NASA and the Mars rover Curiosity!”

NASA’s chief engineer, Victor Shueman, said he is happy with the findings from these other rovers. “So far we’ve found a couple Radiohead CD’s on the Mars Pathfinder from 1997, so that’s all we’ve been listening to here in the control booth for the past 24 hours. For a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself,” Shueman laughs, “That’s from that one karma song of theirs. I really like that song.”

NASA says it will be giving more updates once it finds the other three rovers that were tied to missions that also landed on the Mars surface many, many years before the rover Curiosity.

'Penis Snake' Discovered In Amazon, Looks Exactly As You'd Think

Don't worry, the "penis snake" is totally safe for work. Even though it looks exactly as you'd think.
The unusual species gained its NSFW nickname because of its appearance -- a broad, rounded head atop a thick, cylindrical fleshy body. "But this phallic squirmer isn't a snake at all but an extremely rare, limbless amphibian," notes io9's Lauren Davis.

The "penis snake" was first discovered in Brazil last November where engineers were building a dam in the Madeira River in Rondonia, according to Mongabay. Six of the unusual creatures were found at the time.
Biologist Julian Tupan identified the species as Atretochoana eiselti, a type of caecilian. Legless and lungless, this aquatic animal is thought to breathe through its skin. Tupan, who is working with the company building the dam, disclosed what little is known about the "penis snake" to Brazil's Estadao website, according to the U.K.'sThe Sun.

“Of the six we collected, one died, three were released back into the wild and another two were kept for studies," Tupan reportedly told Estadao. “Despite looking like snakes, they aren’t reptiles and are more closely related to salamanders and frogs. We think the animal breathes through its skin, and probably feeds on small fish and worms, but there is still nothing proven. The Amazon is a box of surprises when it comes to reptiles and amphibians. There are still much more to be discovered.”

Previously, the U.K.'s National History Museum stated that no living populations of the A. eiselti had been found and only two preserved specimens were known.

This is not the first animal to be likened to the male genitalia and it will likely not be the last.

Toothless "Vampire" Skeleton Unearthed in Bulgaria

The discovery of a 700-year-old skeleton in Bulgaria—seen at the country's National Museum of History in June—offers evidence that the fear of vampires is far older than Bram Stoker's Dracula.

The "vampire" was found entombed among church ruins in the Black Sea town of Sozopol (map) earlier in the month. The skeleton had been stabbed in the chest with an iron rod (upper right), which was in the tomb next to the body.

In addition, the skeleton's teeth had been pulled. Scholars believe the rod and tooth-pulling were techniques villagers used to prevent dead men from turning into vampires.

The vampire obsession dates back millennia in countries across Europe.
"In graves thousands of years old, skeletons have been found staked, tied up, buried facedown, decapitated ... all well-attested ways of preempting the [attacks] of wandering corpses," wrote former National Geographic historian Mark Collins Jenkins in his book Vampire Forensics.

London: A professor has indicated that women are always concerned about their weight and they keep looking into every possible option to lose few pounds.

"In our interviews with women aged 16 to 63, we found that all ages wanted to be "skinny but shapely", and most wanted to lose half a stone irrespective of actual size," the Daily Mail quoted Professor Sarah Grogan, author of such books as 'Body Image: Understanding Body -Dissatisfaction In Men, Women and Children,' as saying.

"Women found it easy to tell us what they disliked about their bodies but much harder to think of what they liked.
"Most said that they would be more confident if they lost weight. None of the women who took part in our interviews (even those who were, objectively, very thin) said they wanted to gain weight," Grogan added.
"We live in a culture where slimness for women is linked with all kinds of positive characteristics," explained Grogan, "including self-control, elegance, attractiveness and youth."

Indeed, studies have shown that not only are slim people considered more attractive and likely to do better in job interviews and work situations, they are also less likely to be convicted of crimes, and, if convicted, likely to receive lighter punishments.

A study by the University of Florida found that women who weighed 25lb less than the norm earn around 9,770 pounds more than average-weight women. And, according to German research conducted over 24 years, how much we weigh affects our emotions more than our love life does.

Database Shows How Bees See World in UV

Researchers are being offered a glimpse of how bees may see flowers in all their ultra-violet (UV) glory.
The Floral Reflectance Database (FReD) was created by researchers at Imperial College London and Queen Mary, University of London.

It enables researchers to "see" plant colours through the eyes of bees and other pollinating insects.
Bees have different colour detection systems from humans, and can see in the UV spectrum.
Details of the free database are published in the open-access journal PLoS ONE.

"This research highlights that the world we see is not the physical or the 'real' world - different animals have very different senses, depending on the environment the animals operate in," said Professor Lars Chittka from Queen Mary's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences.

"Much of the coloured world that's accessible to bees and other animals with UV receptors is entirely invisible for us. In order to see that invisible part of the world, we need this special machinery."

The researchers collected what's called "spectroreflective" measurements of the petals and leaves of a large number of different plants. These measurements show the colour of plants across both the visible and invisible spectrum.

Users of the database can then calculate how these plants appear to different pollinating insects, based on studies of what different parts of the spectrum different species see.
Scientists have inferred what colours insects see by inserting microelectrodes into their photoreceptors, and by using less invasive behavioural studies.

Seeing the world as insects may see it can reveal "landing strips" which are invisible to the human eye. These act to guide insects to the nectar they feed on.
These landing strips might take the form of concentric circles of colour or dots.
"Quite often, you will find in radial symmetrical patterns that there is a central area which is differently coloured. In other flowers there are also dots in the centre which indicate where there is basically an orifice for the bee to put in its tongue to extract the goods."

Greenhouse use
But what is the point of such a tool beyond giving researchers an insect's view?
Professor Chittka says seeing these invisible colours may have commercial applications in the greenhouse and beyond.

"Every third bite that you consume at the dinner table is the result of insect pollinators' work. In order to utilise insects for commercial pollination purposes, we need to understand how insects see flowers.
"We need to understand what kind of a light climate we need to generate in commercial glass houses to facilitate detection of flowers by bees."

Co-author Professor Vincent Savolainen, from Imperial College London, says the database also offers us new perspectives on how plant colour evolved.

"We hope this work can help biologists understand how plants have evolved in different habitats, from biodiversity hotspots in South Africa to the cold habitats of northern Europe," he says.
"FReD's global records may show how flower colour could have changed over time, and how this relates to the different insects that pollinate them, and other factors in their local environment."

Africa's "Terrible Hairy Fly" Found in Kenya

(Reuters) - Scientists in Kenya have located one of the world's rarest and oddest-looking flies after a long hunt for an insect dubbed the "terrible hairy fly," experts said on Wednesday.

Scientists first stumbled across the yellow-haired fly in 1933 and then again in 1948. Since then, at least half a dozen expeditions have visited a site between the towns of Thika and Garissa to find it again.
At about one centimeter long and so far found on a single 20-meter high rock, the Mormotomyia hirsuta looks more like a spider with its hairy legs, scientists said.

Unable to fly and partial to breeding in bat feces, the fly is thought to live only in the dank, bat-filled cleft of an isolated rock in the Ukazi Hills. It also has non-functional wings that resemble miniature belt-straps, and tiny eyes.

Dr Robert Copeland of the Nairobi-based International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology said the fly's physical appearance had left scientists bamboozled about where exactly it belonged in the entire order of Diptera, or "true flies."

"We have collected fresh specimens for molecular analysis to see where exactly the 'terrible hairy fly' fits into the evolutionary process," Copeland told Reuters by telephone.
"The fly has no obvious adaptations for clinging onto other animals for transfer from one place to another. With its long legs, it could perhaps wrap itself around a bat and get a ride ... but it's never been found elsewhere."

The Mormotomyia hirsuta is the only member of its biological family and some fly experts reckon the fly will eventually prove to be the only family of fly completely restricted to Africa.

The Segada people of the Phillipines have been burying their dead in coffins hanging from limestone cliffs high above the ground for more than 2,000 years. Their particular tradition involves the placement of dead relatives into caves after carefully preparing a hollowed out log.

Although no one can say for sure, it is likely this ritual concerns the idea that that the higher the body is placed, the closer to heaven. It also provides a way to protect bodies that could potentially be destroyed by natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods.

Segada is a remote area, situated some six hours away (12 in rainy season) from the Luzon island town of Banaue, north of Manila. The cliffs are laden with hundreds of coffins, but how they got there seems a phenomenal effort involving either ropes to lower the coffins down the cliff or some sort of timber scaffolding to raise the coffin to such a height.

The coffins were carved by those that would inhabit them for all eternity as part of this bizarre but very poignant ritual.

The corpses are smoked to preserve them throughout the 5-day pre-burial feast and as the bodies are pushed into the coffins, the cracking and even breaking of bones often occurs as the process is completed.
The deceased remain in caves high in the cliffs in company of the coffins of other ancestors. There are as many as hundreds of coffins lined up in some of these caves.

Due to the fact that the area is unregulated, tourists have been stealing bones as grisly souvenirs of their expedition into the remote mountains.

While visiting these incredible caves, it is recommended that you hire a guide, as the roads are complicated and difficult to navigate.

Of course, don’t bother if you don’t mind the possibility of becoming some of the bones that one day some tourist may steal and keep mounted on their fireplace mantle!

New Study 'proves' that We Can See the Future

London: Events that haven't taken place yet can influence our behavior, reveals a new study.
Parapsychologists have made outlandish claims about precognition - knowledge of unpredictable future events - for years.

The study, set to appear in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, describes a series of experiments involving more than 1000 student volunteers, reports New Scientist.
Daryl Bem of the Cornell University took well-studied psychological phenomena and simply reversed the sequence, so that the event generally interpreted as the cause happened after the tested behavior rather than before it.

In one experiment, students were shown a list of words and then asked to recall words from it, after which they were told to type words that were randomly selected from the same list.
Spookily, the students were better at recalling words that they would later type.
In another study, Bem adapted research on "priming" - the effect of a subliminally presented word on a person's response to an image.

For instance, if someone is momentarily flashed the word "ugly", it will take them longer to decide that a picture of a kitten is pleasant than if "beautiful" had been flashed.
Running the experiment back-to-front, Bem found that the priming effect seemed to work backwards in time as well as forwards.

The effects he recorded were small but statistically significant. In another test, for instance, volunteers were told that an erotic image was going to appear on a computer screen in one of two positions, and asked to guess in advance which position that would be.

The image's eventual position was selected at random, but volunteers guessed correctly 53.1 per cent of the time.

It's Good to Think - But Not Too Much, Scientists Say

People who think more about whether they are right have more cells in an area of the brain known as the frontal lobes.
 
UK scientists, writing in Science, looked at how brain size varied depending on how much people thought about decisions.

But a nationwide survey recently found that some people think too much about life.
These people have poorer memories, and they may also be depressed.
Stephen Fleming, a member of the University College London (UCL) team that carried out the research, said: "Imagine you're on a game show such as 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' and you're uncertain of your answer. You can use that knowledge to ask the audience, ask for help."
The London group asked 32 volunteers to make difficult decisions. They had to look at two very similar black and grey pictures and say which one had a lighter spot.

They then had to say just how sure they were of their answer, on a scale of one to six. Although it was hard to tell the difference, the pictures were adjusted to make sure that no-one found the task harder than anyone else.

People who were more sure of their answer had more brain cells in the front-most part of the brain - known as the anterior prefrontal cortex.

This part of the brain has been linked to many brain and mental disorders, including autism. Previous studies have looked at how this area functions while people make real time decisions, but not at differences between individuals.

Illness link
The study is the first to show that there are physical differences between people with regards to how big this area is. These size differences relate to how much they think about their own decisions.
The researchers hope that learning more about these types of differences between people may help those with mental illness.

Co-author Dr Rimona Weil, from UCL's Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, said: "I think it has very important implications for patients with mental ill health who perhaps don't have as much insight into their own disease."

She added that they hope they may be able to improve patients' ability to recognise that they have an illness and to remember to take their medication.
However, thinking a lot about your own thoughts may not be all good.

Cognitive psychologist Dr Tracy Alloway from the University of Stirling, who was not involved in the latest study, said that some people have a tendency to brood too much and this leads to a risk of depression.
More than 1,000 people took part in a nationwide study linking one type of memory - called "working memory" - to mental health.

Working memory involves the ability to remember pieces of information for a short time, but also while you are remembering them, to do something with them.

For example, you might have to keep hold of information about where you saw shapes and colours - and also answer questions on what they looked like. Dr Alloway commented: "I like to describe it as your brain's Post-It note."

Those with poorer working memory, the 10-15% of people who could only remember about two things, were more likely to mull over things and brood too much.
Both groups presented their findings at the British Science Festival, held this year at the University of Aston in Birmingham.

Chief Rabbi Challenges Stephen Hawking in Row Over Origins of Universe

The chief rabbi, Lord Sacks, hit back at Stephen Hawking after the astrophysicist said God did not create the universe.

In his new book, The Grand Design, published next week, Hawking concludes that science excludes the possibility of a deity and that it is unnecessary to "invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going".

But his finding were described by Sacks as an "elementary fallacy" of logic.
Writing in the Times, the chief rabbi said: "There is a difference between science and religion. Science is about explanation. Religion is about interpretation. The Bible simply isn't interested in how the universe came into being."

Sacks also said the mutual hostility between religion and science was one of "the curses of our age" and warned it would be equally damaging to both.

"But there is more to wisdom than science. It cannot tell us why we are here or how we should live. Science masquerading as religion is as unseemly as religion masquerading as science."

In an earlier book, A Brief History of Time, Hawking was apparently more open to the idea of God, suggesting that a scientific understanding of the universe was not incompatible with a creator. "If we discover a complete theory … it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God," he wrote.

1. Hatchetfish

These ghostly looking creatures are called Hatchetfish and have been found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Their haunted expressions may be enough to strike fear into us but the largest they can grow to is 6 inches. Therefore their defense mechanism is to produce a light which hides them from predators while resembling the blade of a hatchet.

2. Yeti Crab

This weird little hairy crustacean was discovered in the South Pacific Ocean a few years ago. Its proper name is Kiwa hirsuta but everyone seems to prefer the more suited nickname of the Yeti Crab. A whole year of studies was made on this creature and scientists say there is still a lot they don’t understand about it. One thing we do know is that their hairy pincers are crucial to their survival as they contain filamentous bacteria, which detoxify the poisonous minerals in the water in the hydrothermal vents where it lives. Hairy yet clever!

3. Blobfish

Rarely seen by humans until now, the Blobfish has been found in the deep sea off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Their flesh is just a gelatinous mass that has a density that is slightly less than water, allowing it to float above the sea floor without using any energy. How does it survive? Well it eats anything that happens to float in front of its pretty face. What about predators? Seriously! Look at that thing. I think even a shark would reconsider chowing down on a blobfish!

4. Naked Mole Rat

These hairless rodents are also known as the “sand puppy” or the “desert mole rat”. They’ve been found living underground in East African deserts. Bizarrely they live their lives as the bees do, in colonies with one dominant rat who is the queen and is the only one allowed to breed. The rest of the rats are simply the workers. How cute…

5. Aye-aye

The Aye-aye has been in and out of our existence since the 1800s. Thought to be extinct until a few years ago when it was rediscovered in Madagascar, this weird looking skinny-fingered, bug-eyed creature is still on the verge of extinction. Those
skinny fingers and bug eyes are not just there for nothing though. It is the world’s largest nocturnal animal so those eyes are perfect for seeing in the dark, whilst those fingers are used to tap on trees to find grubs to eat. Once it has found something it then uses its elongated middle finger to extract the grubby goodness!

6. Horror Frog

The Horror Frog was discovered in 2008 and to the “horror” of scientists who studied it has an amazing technique. It has the ability to break its own bones in order to produce expendable claws. How frickin cool is that! It also has hairy sides for some reason, which only adds to its nickname of Wolverine after the X-Men character. Claws and mutton chop sideburns…always a good look.

7. Sea Pig

Looking like a raw chicken breast with potato roots for legs, the Sea Pig is a type of sea cucumber. They are a slug of the sea. Trawling the ocean floor they feed on all organic materials that come in their way.

8. Dumbo Octopus

The Dumbo Octopus may look a bit like Pikachu this animal has been named after another cute cartoon character – Disney’s Dumbo, because its two fins resemble oversized ears. Found in the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean “Dumbo” swallows its prey whole (mostly worms and small crustaceans). It only grows up to 20cm too!

9. Bosavi Wooly Rat

Scientists recently discovered a whole bunch of new species in a crater they were exploring on Mount Bosavi in New Guinea. Among the new animals were 16 types of new frogs and a giant bat, but none were as bizarre as this wooly rat. Measuring at 32 inches and weighing just 3.3 pounds the animal showed no fear of human contact allowing the scientists to pick it up. Why was it so brave? Because it had never seen a human before! Amazing.

10. Mura’s Saddleback Tamarin

This brand new monkey was discovered by researchers of the Wildlife Conservation Society in Brazil. Related to the saddleback tamarins this new species are unique because they are remarkably tiny. They weigh less than ¾ of a pound and are just 9 inches tall, yet their tails are a staggering 12.6 inches! Madness!
